Eco-Informatics Centre - a centre that pools together the knowledge of Information Technology
and ecology to further the efforts in the conservation and management of the country’s natural
resources was launched in Bangalore on Friday under the aegis of the Ashoka Trust for Research
in Ecology and the Environment (Atree).

- The Centre has also been awarded a grant by MapInfo - a global leader in location based software solutions - to establish an
internship programme, which will allow a select group of national and international students to work on the
development of webGIS related tools and applications using JAVA technology. Nigel Lester, sales director, MapInfo said, "MapInfo
congratulates ATREE on the successful development and launch of India's first webGIS application on Eco-informatics. This initiative
demonstrates MapInfo's commitment to promote the development of webGIS technology throughout India."
- EcoInformatics WEBGIS portal is being setup at ATREE in partnership with HP and UAS. The Portal will be inaugarated
on May 13th 2005 at Hotel Grand Ashok, B'lore by ATREE, HP and UAS and the Chief Guest will be Dr. Madhavan Nair (Chairman ISRO).
